All about Lucky Clover
What does the Lucky Clover symbolize? Why do people give it as a gift on New Year's Eve? What made it so popular with the Druids?
And why was it so popular among the people? Here are the answers.
Happy New Year with Lucky Clover
Have you ever given Lucky Clover as a gift for a New Year's Eve party? Or offered it to party guests as a host? It is a popular gift when it comes to wishing a Happy New Year. Do you know what the custom is all about? Well, the four-leaf clover symbolizes the world and is said to connect the four cardinal directions with the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Moreover, the first leaflet stands for fame, the second for wealth, the third
for a faithful lover and the fourth for good health. What more could you want!
Important for the magic potion of the druids
Even the Celts considered the clover as a talisman. They believed that nothing bad could happen to them if they possessed a four-leaf clover. It was supposed to give them magical powers and avert spells and evil spirits from them. In a Celtic legend, the four-leaf clover is even the ingredient for a magic potion. Therefore,
it was particularly important for the Druids (spiritual elite of the Celts).
Protected against evils and helped to recognize witches
People also believed in the magical powers of the four-leaf clover. Thus, it was sewn into the clothes of travelers in the Middle Ages to protect them from harm. The lucky finder of a four-leaf clover could hope for an early marriage. Placed in the shoe, it was supposed to help one find the right life partner. Whoever plucked the four-leaf clover before sunrise and placed it in the prayer book was given the ability to recognize witches and other evil beings.
And when dried and placed in a schoolbook, it helped to get good grades.
Wood sorrel instead of meadow clover
Admittedly: the superstition originated around the meadow clover (Trifolium). But for one thing, clover is hard to find in winter. And apart from that, the meadow clover usually appears trifoliate. Therefore, even during the warm season, it is extremely unlikely to find clover with four leaves. The data of experts range from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 10,000, so there you need a lot of time, patience, and perseverance, even in summer. Wood sorrel (Oxalis tetraphylla), on the other hand, is four-leaved and therefore a real chance to
wish someone «good luck» for the New Year without having to look too hard for it.
